年3月9日，我国著名植物学家蔡希陶先生因病在昆明去世，享年70岁。今天屈指算来，蔡先生离开我们已有三十七年了。年，蔡先生创立了云南农林植物研究所（今中国科学院昆明植物研究所之前身）。在建所80周年之际，我们深切怀念研究所的创始人，对蔡先生一生扎根边疆、献身植物科学事业常怀敬意。

自学成才与植物结缘
蔡希陶先生谱名中矩，名希陶，字侃如。年4月10日生于浙江东阳虎鹿镇蔡宅村乐顺堂。
蔡先生于年9月考入上海光华大学物理系。在上海读书期间，常到姐夫陈望道家，期间深受瞿秋白、李达、夏征农、鲁迅、冯雪峰、胡愈之等革命前辈和文学泰斗的影响。年9月，为避*警抓捕，经陈望道推荐，入北平静生生物调查所当练习生。在北平静生所工作期间，该所所长胡先骕先生常派他到北平附近采集植物标本。先生刻苦钻研，自学成才，年即与胡先骕合作发表了《四川省唇形花科植物之研究》一文。
